Barrel House 4 imagines a four-family development that densifies urban environments with thoughtful housing. Built around four distinct unit types, Barrel House 4 creates a diverse community centered on shared space and interpersonal relationships.

A fully accessible, no-step unit fronts the sidewalk with ample interior space, while an efficient one-bedroom unit sits behind the larger units' entries along the backyard. Upstairs, two family-oriented units ascend to the allowed max height, providing the privacy of a more typical single-family experience. All four units share communal outdoor space at the rear, promoting both ownership pride and everyday interaction among neighbors.

Primarily constructed for long-hold, development-focused owners, Barrel House 4 easily conforms to its context and is particularly suited to Avondale and the Price Hill neighborhoods. The framework can take on a traditional 3-story walkup, row-home, or modern infill. To create an adaptable, attainable, and scalable end product, baseline features include covered entries, all-electric infrastructure, solar-ready roofs, and a tight, mechanically vented envelope. Whereas materiality, structure, and system add-ons vary, encouraging contextual development. Owners have the option to upgrade certain items, from aluminum windows and continuous insulation (when not required) to a mass timber structural system and exterior finishes. This approach keeps the design deployable and future-proof—while easily allowing owners to upgrade systems and infrastructure for an investment worth holding onto.

Barrel House 4 brings communities together through intentional design—giving families a chance to spread out near the downtown core, opening doors for residents with accessibility needs, and welcoming young professionals into a shared, walkable block.
